This morning’s trivia on KOIT:

Q: How many text messages does the average teen send every day?

A:  8O.  The number comes from Greenbrae pediatrician Dr. Martin Joffe.  Dr. Joffe, who just so happens to be our pediatrician, worries that texting will become too much of a distraction, if it isn’t already.  One dad called us to say that his daughter sent 190 texts  in three hours the other day. You can read more of Dr. Joffe’s comments here.  One of the reasons kids can send texts so quickly is because they use lots of shortcuts, and I understand very few of them. Here are some translations, FFR. Look that one up.

Regional transportation officials released their yearly congestion report yesterday. There’s good news & bad news. The good news? Traffic delays in the Bay Area were down 12 percent last year.  It’s because fewer people have jobs to drive to, and that’s the bad news. The most congested Bay Area highway is the I-8O approach to the Bay Bridge….an honor that stretch of highway has held every year since 1981, except for one year. In 1989 the Sunol Grade won the um, honor.

This morning’s trivia on KOIT:

Q:  Gary Stewart of LA set a Guinness  record by doing  this almost 178 thousand times?

A:  jumping on a pogo stick

Memorial weekend box office take:

The Night at the Museum sequel did better than Fox even expected, bringing in 70 million. The original ‘Night made 30 million when it opened in 2004. The new Terminator flick, sans our Governor, came in second with almost 54 million. Kim and I saw The Soloist with Jamie Fox, and Robert Downey, Jr.  over the weekend. A real disappointment. And, after seeing the previews for it, we were so looking forward to the movie. Waaayy too long! Many of the scenes could probably have been shortened by a third. My watch died in the theater. Really. The battery kicked about half way through the film. If I started looking at my watch only half way through…well, that tells you something.

The Alhambra Creek beaver population in Martinez is now nine, after four new beaver kits were spotted in the creek near downtown. This’ll be the third generation born there. They believe the babies are about four weeks old, and they arrived just in time for tourist season in Martinez! Early this past Sunday, Martinez resident Moses Silva waded into the creek with a flashlight taped to his video camera, and posted the images here.

I WAS GRADUATED FROM CHICO STATE COLLEGE. YEAH, I KNOW. ‘THE PARTY SCHOOL.’ BUT HEY, YOU CAN ALSO GET A GOOD EDUCATION AT CHICO. I STARTED MY RADIO CAREER AT CHICO AT KHSL.
THIS PAST WEEKEND, WE HAD OUR ANNUAL DELTA PSI DELTA-CHICO STATE- FRATERNITY REUNION. WE WERE KNOW AS THE ‘ANIMAL HOUSE’ BEF0RE THE ANIMAL HOUSE MOVIE WAS EVEN THOUGHT OF.
WE HAD THE TOGA PARTIES, FOOD FIGHTS, AND PANTY RAIDS. YOU NAME IT, WE DID IT. AND MOST OF THE GUYS INVOLVED IN ALL THE FRIVOLITY WERE THERE AT THE HISTORIC NORTHERN QUEEN RESORT LAST WEEKEND. I EVEN BROUGHT ALONG A BATCH OF NEW ORANGE AND BLACK T-SHIRTS.
EVERYONE WAS ASKING WHY I HAD NEVER BROUGHT MY GIRL FRIEND JOY TO PREVIOUS REUNIONS. I SAID THAT SHE DIDN’T KNOW ANYONE. I DIDN’T THINK SHE’D HAVE A GOOD TIME. BOY, WAS I WRONG. SHE HAD A BLAST. IT’S A GOOD THING SHE LOVES TO TALK. :)
AND WAS I EVER SURPRISED AND HONORED. KEITH AND GIGI CALKINS MADE A SCRAP BOOK AND AN EASEL- LIKE-BOARD FOR ME. IT CONTAINED A ‘THIS IS YOUR LIFE’ TESTIMONIAL. THEY LISTED THINGS ABOUT ME THAT EVEN I DIDN’T KNOW. OR DIDN’T WANT TO KNOW. LOL :) IT MUST HAVE TAKEN THEM DAYS OF WORK AND RESEARCH. THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH. I WASN’T AWARE I HAVE HAD SUCH A GOOD TIME. :)
HOPEFULLY I CAN GET A PHOTO THAT WILL LOOK GOOD ON THE BLOG.
THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A GOOD FRIEND, AND I FEEL LUCKY TO HAVE ABOUT 80 OF THEM.
I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT GET-TOGETHER.
HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY.

2009 American Idol is now in the record books…and all I can say is thank God Adam Lambert doesn’t have to record the very weak Kara DioGuardi orginal “No Boundaries” It could quite end Kris Allen’s career before it takes off…best of luck to Kris…he wasn’t my choice.

All in all it was a very entertaining show…did you notice the star studded A-list of performers were predominately Lite Rock artists? Hmmm, familiarity breeds content…

After that heatwave we had over the weekend, the strawberries and blackberries are sweet and tasty…I picked some up at my favorite little farm stand on the corner of Byron Highway and Highway 4. The sweet corn is not far behind, already knee high in some fields.

I live in the Tri-Valley area and have seen the devastation that the economy has taken on small business. I want give kudos to Lou and the crew working at Taqueria Azteca in Dublin. They have some of the best local Mexican food in the area…they were hit hard by all the businesses in the area going out of business…Good Guys, Circuit City, Meryvn’s, a car dealership, Home Expo…AND a national Mexican franchise moved in across the street…and they are only off by 30%. Stop in and try the shrimp quesadilla and tell them Laurie Sanders from KOIT sent you…

This morning’s trivia question on KOIT:

Q:  How much trash was picked up after Sunday’s Bay To Breakers?

A: about 13 tons…7 tons less than last year. The tighter alcohol  restriction this year is credited for the lighter trash load.  Booze bottles are heavy, after all.  But there’s still more to pick up. Volunteers are needed to help with trash removal near the Beach Chalet 9am Saturday morning.

Please remember to vote today.

The Newsoms’ Russian Hill condo is off the market, and reportedly went for just under 3 million, and sold in an astonishing short period of time…just under a month. “The Mayor’s Former Residence” carries some cache, I suppose. Mayor Newsom and his wife, Jennifer, are expecting a little Newsom. So they’ll need more space than the one bedroom Russian Hill pad. Yes. That’s right. One bedroom for 3 mil.

This morning’s trivia question on KOIT:

Q: Who turned down the role of Vivian (Julia Roberts) in “Pretty Woman”?

A: Daryl Hannah. Oh, so did Michelle Pfeiffer, and Meg Ryan.

For other film career missteps, check out one of my favorite sites.

Then there’s the movie star/body builder who gave up film roles to become governor of a Really Big, Really Broke Western State.  Governor Schwarzenegger wants to sell the Cow Palace, and the LA Coliseum to raise some cash. He also wants to sell fixer upper San Quentin Prison, effectively releasing 38 thousand prisoners. What could possibly go wrong with THAT?

There is a star studded event coming to the U.S. Mint here in San Francisco at 5th and Mission.
It’s called Standing Ovation: Rockin’ the Mint .

It’s to honor San Francisco’s elcetic music and musicians that have made their mark in music and San Francisco’s history.  And it’s to benefit the renovation and restoration of the U.S. Mint!

Talk about star-studded…

the 7 honorees are:

Carlos Santana

The Grateful Dead

Huey Lewis

Booker T.

Jefferson Starship

Boz Scaggs

and Tower of Power.

The mint is becoming a living musuem dedicated to the stories behind the artifacts and the company – Wolfgang’s Vault is helping to supply of never see artwork and recorded concerts from the late Bill Graham.

So if you miss or can’t afford to attend the gala on June 4th…The Mint is hoping to be open the 5 days following the event to let you come in and enjoy and delight in all the memorbilia…

This is a first…because the Mint is techinically not officially open…so as we get closer, I’ll be reminding you on the air to head over to 5th and Mission.

I’m talking about American Idol, of course … and it’s weird how life is so interconnected.

I’m originally from Wisconsin, my sister Suzy, still lives there, Danny Gokey, American Idol is from Milwaukee…well, come to find out that my brother-in-law, Jim works with and is friends with someone named Noel who gets to hang out with Danny and his family.  So Jim’s only 2 degrees of separation.

This morning’s trivia question on KOIT:

Q: Who invented the charcoal briquette?

A: Thomas Edison in 1920. Actually Edison and Henry Ford were kind of co-inventors, using wood scraps and sawdust from Ford’s car factory. They sold the idea to E. G. Kingsford.

Do you prefer charcoal or propane when you grill? I have to say that I like the taste that charcoal grilled food has. But you can’t beat the convenience of propane, so it’s gas for us.

It’ll be trivia again tomorrow morning at 6:20

Need a reason to check your phone bill every once in a while? I don’t mean just glance over it, but really drill down and ask questions. That’s what I did yesterday, and I’m glad. A while ago, we switched long distance plans at home. The phone company added the new plan, but failed to remove the old one…billing me for both plans AT THE SAME TIME! ‘So I’ll be on the phone company this afternoon, and I’ll tell you how it works out.

‘See you tomorrow morning at 5.
